If you know, you know by Tyra Maria Trono
1 May – 14 Jun 2026In Manila, the nights are coloured by a thousand neon lights from the businesses and bars that enliven them. The flow of traffic, the heat, and the sounds of the city form a familiar ambience that Tyra Maria Trono rediscovers after long hours travelling from Montréal. While urban environments are often dedicated to consumerism, they also evoke powerful emotions when memories are stirred, especially for those who live far away from the places they love. This experience forms the basis of the artist’s exploration of the textures of diasporic life, when that link is often maintained by a nostalgic relationship to souvenirs gathered over time.
Tightly grouped photographs show countless moments and trinkets collected during Trono’s trips to the Philippine capital and in her Montréal neighbourhood of Côte-des-Neiges, which is home to a large Filipino community. While these consumer items reflect the socio-economic conditions that underlie their mass production, here they mainly serve as emotionally charged mementos and markers of cultural identity. In a time when the threat of destruction and loss looms over the Philippine archipelago—an area highly vulnerable to natural disasters and the impacts of climate change—Trono’s installation speaks to the urgent need to preserve traces of what it feels like to be there by capturing entire worlds within tiny things.
-I want to thank everyone who made this exhibition possible. Thank you to my mother, and to both sides of my family, the Hufancias and the Tronos, for their love and support. Thank you to Phil for always being there. Thank you to my professors, Marisa Portolese, Geneviève Cadieux, and Jaret Vadera, for their guidance throughout this journey.

Translation by Matthew Elijah QuizonTyra Maria Trono is an artist whose work explores memory, diaspora, and cultural identity through the material traces of global migration, labour, and inheritance. Engaging with everyday objects, rituals, and dollar-store aesthetics, her practice investigates how sentimental and disposable items circulate across borders, shaping diasporic belonging. Through installations, she examines how cultural memory is mediated by economic systems, highlighting the complex intersections between care, commodification, and transnational exchange.Just a Small Amount for Your Expenses is an installation that blends photographs, souvenirs, and discount-store objects sourced from the Philippines and Montreal to explore diasporic longing and cultural transmission. Reflecting her ongoing engagement with dollar-store aesthetics, the work evokes the textures of homecoming through pasalubong-inspired gestures. It invites viewers to consider how memory, sentimentality, and cultural identity are negotiated through everyday objects shaped by migration, nostalgia, and consumerism.may utang ka sakin / you owe me something / vous me devez quelque choseWorkshop may utang ka sakin / you owe me something / vous me devez quelque chose is a participatory postcard-making and object-exchange workshop that explores soft debts, memory, and reciprocity. Participants are invited to create handmade postcards using dollar store materials and images, including photographs by Tyra Maria Trono and visual designs by John Mendoza. Each person will make two postcards, one to keep and one to exchange for a cantaloupe drink served. We will collect one postcard from each participant to form a small collective archive. The event will close with an open karaoke session, where people can dedicate songs to someone they love, miss, or feel owed by.

	At a distance. From within.

Projet Casa, Montreal in collaboration with Pop Montreal and Art Volt

Curated by Bettina Pérez Martínez and Tyra Maria TronoSeptember 15 – October 02 2022Photos by Mike PattenAt a distance. From within.“The notion of the rhizome maintains, therefore, the idea of rootedness but challenges that of a totalitarian root. Rhizomatic thought is the principle behind what I calI the Poetics of Relation, in which each and every identity is extended through a relationship with the Other.” (Poetics of Relation, Glissant, 11)Diaspora, by definition, evokes the allegorical description of the scattering of plant seeds across the earth, to then settle and grow roots in another location. These roots then spread into creating rhizomatic systems that continuously grow underground, a tie to and a creation in the land they are now located in. At a distance - from within draws from the allegory of the seed as an entity that creates a sense of rhizomatic placemaking. This relational form of placemaking refers then to the flourishing of communities, practices, and exchanges that come from diverse and multiple diasporas. Placemaking then functions as a way to create real or imaginary worlds that encourage the diasporic experience, rather than reject the ‘Other,’ and allows artists and individuals to experience a sense of community that creates and embraces a hybrid space of identity.Despite numerous theoretical developments that approach diasporic identity, oftentimes cultural writers use the term in a way that flattens, reduces or creates an ‘othering’ of individual experience and identity. Through our investigation, we seek to avoid these generalities associated with diaspora studies, but rather hold together both the differences and similarities experienced by diverse diasporic communities. As Sundus Abdul Hadi mentions: “armed with free and critical thinking, artists can craft new narratives and forge new connections outside of the spheres of national identity and official history.” Our curatorial approach recognises the differences that exist among diverse diasporic persons while also attempting to bridge certain similar social, cultural, and political lived experiences that emerge from geographical dislocation.Curated by Bettina Pérez Martínez and Tyra Maria TronoHolly ChangJin HeewoongKuh del RosarioLaura Acosta and Santiago TaveraMelissa Raymond and René Sandín My-Van DamPar NairSantiago Tamayo SolerSeptember 15 – October 02 2022Projet Casa, Montrealin collaboration with Pop Montreal and Art VoltArt POP x Projet Tabloïd Work by Holly ChangPOP Sympo : Art POP PanelArtist Talk with Jin Heewoong and Joyce Jourmaa Moderation by Tyra Maria Trono FILM POP X ART POP - Cinéma Moderne Foreign in a Domestic Sense by Natalia Lassalle-Morillo and Sofía Gallisá MurienteTrudging Congealed Seas (Pilot) by Vanessa GoddenUntitled until I am no longer bored by Joyce Joumaa.ART POP X WORKSHOP SERIESScent, Language & Olfactory Imprints by Dana El MasriIn [the, your, our] backyard by Chloë LalondeTake Care of Youself by Sundus Abdul HadiI would like to thank Jennifer Dorner, Fannie Gadouas, Marc Wieser, Danielle & Paul, Caroline Douville, Kevin, Olivier, DJ Podrido, Max Holzberg, Hugo Dufour, Bronson Smillie, Philippe Levasseur, Paul Lofeodo, Victoria Carrasco, and John Mendoza.
